A Steadfast Commitment to Customers and the Community
A MESSAGE FROM TIMOTHY E. HOEKSEMA, CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF MIDWEST AIRLINES
Like other airlines, Midwest Airlines is operating under the most challenging economic environment in the history of the industry. As oil prices soar to record levels, airlines have been dramatically affected by the cost increases. Fuel now comprises 50% of our costs, up from 20% just a few years ago. In the last year alone, fuel is up 65% and if prices stay where they are, we will pay hundreds of millions of dollars more for fuel this year than last year.
We’ve already taken diffi cult steps to remain competitive, including adjusting our route system and reducing our workforce. A fee for a second piece of checked luggage will help defray the cost of fuel for the additional weight on our planes. Despite the challenges we are facing, be assured that we remain committed to maintaining our unique culture of service and providing “The best care in the air” to our customers.
A key initiative that will both help our economic position and provide more opportunities for travelers is the introduction of Midwest Class, offering a choice of a comfortable, low-fare Saver seat or a two-across classic Signature seat on every Midwest Airlines flight.
