Some Like it Hot

Open those pores and breathe in deep at these hot springs getaways

A hot spring is produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater from the Earth’s crust. Hot springs often have a very high mineral content, which is said to have healing properties. Best of all, you don’t have to fly halfway across the world to find a relaxing spring; some of the best are in Midwest Airlines destinations.

El Dorado Hot Springs

El Dorado, Az.
About 50 minutes from Phoenix
This secluded getaway is all about the hot spring experience. The back-to-basics mineral spa is located over an enormous subterranean water source, which has been enjoyed by Arizona residents for hundreds of years. Keep in mind that this tiny piece of heaven can only accommodate a limited number of people (there are just a few cabins for rent), so reservations are suggested if you’re planning to stay overnight. 623-386-5412, www.el-dorado.com

Warner Springs Ranch

Warner Springs, Calif.
About two hours from Los Angeles and 90 minutes from San Diego

In the foothills of Palomar Mountain lies this resort, which promises to renew mind and body. It might look luxe, but the 240 cottages are decidedly cozy and laidback. In addition to the three hot spring pools, there are walking trails, horseback riding, tennis courts and a challenging 18-hole championship golf course. With all of these activities between dips, you might even need to take a rejuvenating trip to the resort’s spa. 760-782-4200, www.warnersprings.com

Hot Springs Lodge and Pool

Glenwood Springs, Colo.
About two and a half hours from Denver

Discovered by explorers in 1860, the Yampah hot springs had already been considered a sacred healing spot by the Ute Indians for hundreds of years. The spring feeds the resort’s pool with 3.5 million gallons of hot, mineral-rich water. While a hot spring pool is usually all about relaxing, Glenwood adds some fun to the mix with two water slides that, combined, offer 300 feet of twists and turns and cascade down more than four stories. But know that when the fun is done, a massage awaits at the lodge’s athletic club. 800-537-7946, www.hotspringspool.com
