WE SPOKE TO NAGLER ABOUT
HIS ART, LIFE AND WHAT HE
LOVES ABOUT MICHIGAN, HIS
FAVORITE STATE:
What is the best season to be in Michigan?
“One of the great things about Michigan is that, as a photographer, I can enjoy and photograph all four seasons. But if I had to select a favorite, it would be spring. The early morning light, often accompanied by fog and mist, just can’t be beat. Everything isfresh, flowers are blooming, leaves are maturing, waterfalls are flowing, and the promise of so many photographic opportunities is in the air.”
What is your favorite part of the state?
“My favorite place in Michigan is the western Upper Peninsula. The state’s most awesome waterfalls are there, falls that can compete with mighty ones around the globe. Also, the very scenic Porcupine Mountains are there, Michigan’s hilliest area. Little traffic, no major highways, a laidback atmosphere…it’s like stepping back a little in time.”
Why did you choose a black-and-white format for the book?
“While I’ve always enjoyed shooting in color, there’s something about black and white that stirs the emotions and stimulates the imagination. While color often documents what something looks like, black and white allows the photographer to better put his or her interpretation into the image. You might say that color photography is like seeing the movie, while black and white is like reading the book.”
Did you shoot the pictures by yourself or with the help of a crew?
“I took all the photographs over a period of about 10 months. I did not use a crew, nor was anybody with me. I did a series of ‘wandering’ trips for the majority of the photographs in the book. Usually, I travel with no itinerary, literally stumbling on many of my subjects. Traveling alone eliminates distractions and allows me to really get into my photography.”
These photos are all very isolated, but also peaceful. Is this a reflection of your life?
“I feel I have the perfect blend of alone time and time with people when I do my photography. I interact with people daily and in doing many classes and presentations. I have met numerous interesting people and have made many friends.”
Monte Nagler’s Michigan is published by the University of Michigan Press.
