In 1991, when Kate Atwood was just 12 years old, something happened that would change the course of her life forever: Her mother passed away from breast cancer. Now, 16 years later, Atwood has turned her loss into a gift for grieving children like her. Through support groups, outings and other programs, Kate’s Club provides a safe and uplifting place in Atlanta for children who have lost a parent or sibling.

Do you feel that what you’re doing for children is especially important during the holidays?

“Absolutely. While everyone is in a joyous state, these kids and families are in a state of grief, where they focus on what they don’t have. We really focus on introducing ways to still celebrate a loved one, to honor their life and build new traditions without erasing old ones.

The holidays are a way to celebrate life and grieve in an upbeat way. One of the biggest messages we try to get across is that we are creating an environment that is fun and hopeful for kids. The goal for any child facing adversity is to make sure they are in a safe place to thrive.”

What are your favorite ways to celebrate the holidays in Atlanta?

“I love that everything is lit up…I feel like the overall energy is about enjoying life and each other. One thing I love to see is that people extend themselves to help others during this time, and that’s always a great thing to do with family and friends—to give to others.

I also take the kids to Centennial Park for ice-skating and the tree lighting.”

What are your goals for the future of Kate’s Club?

“As an organization, our vision is to be a part of a world where it’s okay to grieve. For our children we have to build a path of hope and opportunity, and Kate’s Club just wants to be a part of it. Right now we’re focused on the 40,000 children in Atlanta, but there are other organizations that are doing great work.”
