National Powwow

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN

More than 800 Native American performers come together at the Verizon Center to participate in a three-day dance and drum competition. This year’s theme explores the origins of powwows as war dances and the involvement of women in warrior cultures, as well as the current situation of Native Americans in the military today. Native food and arts and crafts vendors are also part of the festivities.

AFRICAN WORLD FESTIVAL

For the last 25 years, African World Festival— held at Henry Maier Festival Park—has celebrated African heritage and culture. This year’s festival includes the first-ever Celebrity Shoot-Out Golf Outing and Silent Auction, taking place July 26 at Hawk’s View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, Wis.

Music is the centerpiece of this 10-day festival that celebrates the culture of wine country, about an hour north of San Francisco. Joshua Bell (violinist), Frederica von Stade (mezzo-soprano) and the renowned Russian National Orchestra are scheduled to perform in three Napa Valley venues, the newest of which is a castle amid rolling vineyards. Other highlights include a gala and auction, wine tours, tastings, and exclusive lunches and dinners.

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH

OSHKOSH, WIS.
JULY 23-29

Started in 1953 as the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Fly-In Convention, this annual air pageant has become the world’s premier aviation event. Held at Wittman Regional Airport, about an hour-and-a-half drive north of Milwaukee, the celebration attracts 800,000 people from 70 different nations. Check out everything from vintage and hand-built planes to light-as-a-feather gliders. Enthusiasts can mingle with the industry’s top personalities, and discover new ideas from various workshops and forums throughout the week.
