THE BIKE NEW YORK FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR

Not really a race, but not a leisurely bike ride either, this tour offers participants a chance to see New York’s five boroughs in an innovative and challenging way. The largest mass cycling event in the USA takes off from Battery Park in Manhattan on May 6 and travels through New York’s outer boroughs on 42 miles of traffic-free streets, avenues, highways and bridges.

Following the tour, there is a festival at Fort Wadsworth in the Gateway National Recreation Area on Staten Island, featuring live music, food and exhibitions.

ST. ANTHONY’S TRIATHLON

If you think you can handle it, St. Anthony’s Triathlon, the first major triathlon on the U.S. calendar, takes place April 29 in and around St. Petersburg, Fla. Around 3,500 individuals and 100 relay teams line up to swim a mile through Tampa Bay, cycle 25 miles, then run six miles as they compete for $50,000 in prize money.

Over the years, the event has been named “Race of the Year” by USA Triathlon and has served as a qualifier for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. If you fancy taking part in the main race, you can register online.
